The paint you use in your project determines the final look as well as its longevity. That is why it is important to choose the one that best fits your project. You do not want a surface that looks streaky, nor would you appreciate a project that deteriorates easily because of incorrect paint. In this guide, EA Pro Painters discusses the best paint types for projects. We will discuss the characteristics of each paint type and why these properties make them suitable for certain needs, materials, and environments. Keep reading to learn more.
Water-based paints are some of the most common types of paint. They are an emulsion that uses water as the medium for carrying the pigment. More specific examples include latex paint and acrylic paint. These are suitable for most indoor paint jobs, drying up faster than old-based paints. Plus, these paints do not release as many volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making them safer and more environmentally friendly. The main disadvantage of water-based paints is that they are not as durable as oil-based paints. As such, we recommend using them on interior walls, ceilings, and furniture.
Another popular paint type is oil-based paint, such as alkyd oil paints and enamel paints. Given how oil is insoluble in water, oil-based paints are ideal for outdoor projects, able to resist moisture and weather. Exterior paint, which is often oil-based, is engineered to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and weather conditions, making it a necessary investment for outdoor projects due to its durability and enhanced appearance. These paints are also long-lasting and create smooth finishes. Of course, there are drawbacks to oil paints. These have longer drying times, and the VOCs they produce are at higher levels than water-based paints. Cleaning up stains and used brushes also require strong solvents like mineral spirits.
Elastomeric paint is a new type of exterior paint, and it is made for exterior surfaces. However, elastomeric paint is water-based, so it brings together the best properties of the first two types. Once this type of paint dries, it forms a thick, waterproof layer that can withstand extreme temperatures, UV radiation, and moisture. The main use for elastomeric paint is painting masonry, siding, and other surfaces exposed to harsh weather. The main drawback of elastomeric paint is the cost. Using this paint type is an investment, but the long-term benefits are worth it.
These paints do not fit the general classification of oil or water-based products. In most cases, specialty paints are ideal for specific projects or materials.
Outside of the oil and water distinction, paints can be divided based on the finish. There are four main classifications.
Many types of paintings exist, making it hard for inexperienced painters to choose the ones that are best suited for their projects. Follow the guide we shared above to help you get started as you plan for a new project, whether it is a piece of wooden furniture, concrete fences, or the walls of your kitchen.
